What was the theme for the project?
The theme for the project was Grizzly and Ghastly which was a poem book written by Roald Dahl based on the story Little Red Riding Hood.

How have you developed your ideas? How did your work change through the project?
With my first attempt at the book cover, I tried to keep things less images. I thought that doing this it would make the cover look more eye catching with the one colour and simplicity. I then decided to make a second book cover which I thought looked more appealing than the first one. I did this by using more images than I first intended.

How much reference material did you find? Do you think you should have done more or less?
I used some reference material, of my own, but I think that I could have used more to inspire more ideas.

What artists or designers have you looked at to help and inspire you?
I have looked at Scott Cambell to inspire my ideas.

What materials, tools and techniques did these artists use?
Scott Cambell used gouache paint.

How have your skills developed during the project?
During the project, I feel that I have improved my drawings. I have done this by, using different different materials such as graphite and charcoal. I also have learnt to use photoshop and scan with image capture. Although I have learned to use photoshop, I feel that there is still a lot more things I can learn.

Are there any aspects of your studies that you wish you had explored further?
I wish I had used more of my own reference material so that I had more ideas to inspire me.

How have you used formal elements such as line, tone, colour and shape?
I have used biro to create different tones in my drawings. I also used gouache when drawing copies
from Scott Cambell. By mixing it with water i could create different tones of grey and black. I also used tone when using ink.

What materials did you use, and why? Did they work successfully?
I used a variety of materials throughout the project such as; gouache, ink, biro, charcoal and graphite. For my final piece I only used ink and biro because I thought that the drawings, using these materials, looked the best for my book cover.

What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful?
I wanted my book cover to look friendly and appealing to children. I think I achieved this by using well known characters such as Red Riding Hood and the wolf. The type face I have used is fun and exciting to look at. I have also made some of the type faces with a softer background as this creates a warm and friendly feel. The wolf has no expression of anger as he is showing no teeth.

Are you happy with your final piece? Are there any elements you like in particular?
I think my final piece portrays the message I wanted to convey, therefore, I think it has been successful. I particularly like that Red Ridings Hood is the only colour on the whole book cover.

Is there anything you would change? Why?
If I could do the book cover again, I would make the cover more eye catching by adding larger images, such as just a wolfs face, to catch the readers attention. I would also add personification to the type faces I have used as the main title as this would make my finished piece look more individual.
